Sometimes you go to a play and it takes a considerable period of time before can even figure out what you have just seen , yet alone decipher the meaning behind it.
Certainly the main theme , as the title suggests , is that we are all fucked.
A very commendable and insightful comment on our modern times.
The characters are the usual surface persona type you see much these days , great on the outside , successful even , but a complete and unholy mess in the inside with nothing but personal failure and alienation to spite at the world.
The characters remind me of some you get on Facebook these days , you know the ones i mean , they have 260+ friends , but the only time you see them is when you see them walking alone in Sauchiehall street with a Marks & Spencer shopping bag waving accusing fingers at the sky , muttering unsweet nothings at lampposts whilst trying to retain balance.
It always strikes me as kind of odd that someone with 653 friends could be on Facebook every second day. There is something not right with that picture.
The play itself was a lot of fun , i met up with a Friend beforehand. He was being "befriended" by a young chav who wanted to show him his new tattoos. My Friend was disconcerted when the person started unstrapping his belt and pulling his trousers down. The fact this was in a full restaurant , and he was halfway through a delicious white chocolate covered carrot cake added to the embarrassment. After a lot of hugging and jovial pledges of everlasting camaraderie he managed to shake of this young chav, who promptly left sagging on the shoulders of his pals.No doubt the chav and his buddies would have hours and hours of fun relating the whole incident with their army of friends on Facebook.
During the halftime break we spotted a poster of the nice sounding David Greig production coming around in October.David Greig has written some excellent plays including a stage adaptation of When the Bulbul Stops Singing by Raja Shehadeh , a production that won the Amnesty Best Human Rights Play at the Edinburgh Festival a few years back.
